Human Rights Council renews UN seats

Six countries that were never part of the Human Rights Council of theUnited Nations (UN) are among 15 new members of the body, electedafter one round of secret ballots among the Member States of the UN this morning, reported the website UN.

Austria, Benin, Botswana, Congo, Costa Rica and Kuwait will make theirdebut on the council next month, starting three-year terms on the board of47 members who distribute their seats according to a formula based onregions of the planet.

The other newly elected members - although we have held seats sincethe council was created in 2006 - are Burkina Faso, Chile, Czech Republic, India, Indonesia, Italy, Peru, Philippines and Romania. The president of the UN General Assembly, Joseph Deiss, announced the results at the UN headquarters in New York.
