Zelaya back to Honduras after almost two years of exile

Former President of Honduras Manuel Zelaya broke on the afternoon of Saturday (28), from Managua, the Nicaraguan capital, heading for his country, ending nearly two years of political exile since he was deposed in June 2009. In Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, a crowd decided to spend the night vigil in the Plaza Isis Obed, which is near the airport Tocontín where the plane landed bringing Zelaya.

Before leaving Nicaragua, Zelaya said his return to Honduras is the product of great efforts at mediation and means a great moment for the victory of the institutional processes of America Latina.Em press statements, he stressed the Honduran people's struggle for democracy and said he considers his return a "big step" in this sense, since "it is the people who are in the process of reconciliation."

Zelaya also emphasized that the restitution of their rights, as well as a willingness for dialogue and diplomacy demonstrated by all authorities involved in the conflict, "are the sure ways of mankind." For him, it shows "how is the training of citizens of the 21st century." "This is an effort of all the American countries (...) and I hope that such agreements give yourselves peacefully to defend democracy," he added.

At a rally in his honor at the Airport of Managua, Zelaya mentioned international efforts on
various forums for his return to Honduras and thanked the presidents of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, and the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, the country where he was in exile for 17 months. He also thanked the participation of the presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, Ecuador, Rafael Correa and Bolivia's Evo Morales.

The former president also hailed the Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro and Colombian Piedad Córdoba, human rights activist, who accompany him on the trip back to Honduras.

Zelaya arrived in Nicaragua from the Dominican Republic, where, on Friday (27), his family thanked President Leonel Fernandez, the "brave" decision to accept him in their country and to what repondeu Fernandez: was "an honor" .

Also yesterday, in Honduras, the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS) Jose Miguel Insulza, said that with the return of former president, will begin the process of reconstruction and reconciliation in the Central American country.

"We want a path of reconciliation, reconstruction of a solid and democratic country, like dreaming all Hondurans (...). Hopefully on Wednesday (June 1, when they meet the foreign ministers of the OAS) want things to end up like ending, that we overcome the difficult period and Honduras's return to his duties within the organization, "he added.
