Ferrari Alonso renews contract until 2016
Ferrari announced on Thursday to extend the contract of Fernando Alonso to the end of 2016 season of Formula 1. Pleased with the deal, the Spanish rider said he planned to quit his career at Ferrari. "We are delighted to have renewed the contract for a pilot who has always shown to have a winning mentality, even in the worst circumstances," he said on Thursday, team president Luca di Montezemolo.
Since 2010 at Ferrari, Alonso won five races for Ferrari and had a contract until the end of 2012. "Fernando has all the technical and personal skills to play a leading role in the history of Ferrari, and I hope it poses to enrich it with the most wins in a short space of time," he said.
"I immediately felt comfortable at Ferrari and now I feel like my second family," said Alonso. "I have the utmost faith in men and women who work in Maranello and those who lead them. So it was natural for me to decide to extend my long-term relationship with this team that I certainly will end my career in Formula 1 one day. "
Alonso arrived at Ferrari after passage by Renault, and nearly won the title of the drivers' championship in Formula 1 last year in his first season at Ferrari. After an uneven start to the season, reached the final race with an advantage in qualifying but the German driver Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, won the title after a series of errors by the team and Alonso.
Ferrari also had a poor start this season. Alonso, who has been champion twice, is fifth in the drivers' championship, and his team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa in sixth place after fighting in four races. The Spanish Grand Prix takes place this weekend in Barcelona.
